Crete, the largest island in Greece, is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From the famous Elafonisi Beach to the secluded Ammoudaki Beach, there is a beach for everyone on this Mediterranean island.

Ammoudaki Beach: a hidden gem in Crete

Ammoudaki is our favorite beach. For most locals it is considered the best beach in the surrounding area of Plakias. You might hear them refer to it as Mikro Ammoudi instead of Ammoudaki, but note that it goes by both names. Nestled between high cliffs that cast majestic shadows over its clear, calm waters, this hidden gem offers the ideal environment for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling.

Beyond its breathtaking natural beauty, Ammoudaki Beach is located near the charming village of Plakias, where time seems to stand still. Here, visitors can indulge in the freshest seafood delicacies and savor the authentic flavors of traditional Cretan cuisine.

Accessible by boat, bike, car or by foot from our hotel, Mikro Ammoudi promises an unforgettable escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether seeking adventure or relaxation, this secluded paradise caters to every traveler’s desire, offering a unique blend of natural wonders and cultural delights.

3 reasons why it’s our favorite

  • Its clear, crystal waters.
  • Its pebbly beach, which is the perfect kind of pebble that doesn’t stick to the body but allows you to sit comfortably without a towel. These pebbles extend far into the sea, creating beautiful, exotic waters that resemble a pool.
  • And finally, the unique wild landscape around it with black and blue rocks and the dry mountains behind, with no trace of civilization nearby.

Activities at Ammoudaki Beach

Ammoudaki Beach, with its crystal-clear waters, is a snorkeler’s paradise. The excellent visibility reveals a vibrant underwater world teeming with colorful fish, sea urchins, and starfish. Scuba divers too will find this a haven for underwater exploration.

For those looking for a more relaxing experience, around 20 sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent, allowing visitors to soak up the sun and enjoy the scenery. While Greece doesn’t officially have nude beaches, a section of Ammoudaki Beach is informally recognized for nude sunbathing and swimming, offering a discreet spot for those who prefer a natural beach experience.

No matter what your interests are, you are sure to find something to enjoy at Ammoudaki Beach. With its crystal clear waters, stunning scenery, and range of activities, it is the perfect place to spend a day or two exploring the natural beauty of Crete.

Beach facilities and amenities

You will not find much but a charming beachside cantina, beautifully integrated into the surroundings, situated right behind and slightly elevated with a perfect little balcony, offering nice snacks and giving you the opportunity to stay all day at the beach.

The owners of the cantina have built a small stone chapel at the top of the hill behind the beach. The view from there is very beautiful and definitely worth exploring!

For lunch, you can either go to the previous beach, Damnoni, or to the next beach, Amoudi, which also has a nice cantina with souvlaki. Additionally, we suggest to visit the village of Lefkogeia, just a 7-minute drive away, and eat at Stelios’ traditional family tavern.

Generally there are no children except Sundays. It is not beach friendly for children.
